If you are being pursued by some sort of animal, step one is to assess the threat level. (example, a squirrel would have a relatively low threat profile, whereas, say, a grizzly bear might chart slightly higher on the old threat-o-meter.) ONLY, and I cannot stress this highly enough, ONLY jettison your precious Salami cargo if the situation is literally life or death. (And perhaps not even then, a few martyrs would really help gain publicity for the cause.) As a matter of fact, I do not want to hear that any of you tossed off your Salami for anything less than a T-Rex. (and if you are attacked by a T-Rex, what the hell kind of neighborhood are you Salami'ing anyways??) If, on the more likely occurence, that you are being chased by other humans there are a few simple steps that can be taken to avoid, or at the very least delay, capture.

Step 1: reach into your Salami-Sack, take a slice of Salami, and quickly, but accurately chew it into a (patent-pending) Salamask (illus. below), then duct tape that over your face Hannibal Lecter style. (this has the dual effect of hiding your true identity, while also giving you a quick energy boost from the succulent bites of Salami taken from the Salamask)

(<----- Silence of the Salami!)

Step 2: Remove your pants. (This has a tendency to both amuse and confuse those who are chasing you. Plus, it gives you even more reason to not get caught. Gettin caught with a Salami-Sack, and a roll of duct tape would be bad enough, but to be caught with all of that AND not be wearing pants? Awk-ward!)

Step 3: The moment that you are out of sight, find a safe location, and HIDE THE SALAMI! (above all, the Salami must be saved. If caught, the worst that will happen is that you may be severely beaten, and/ or spend a night in jail, playing an entirely different variety of "hide the Salami")

Step 4: Take copious amounts of photographs for evidentiary purposes. (plus, again, the cause needs all the publicity it can get.)

Step 5: Post the aforementioned pictures here, on any webpages that you may already have, on friends webpages, on your mother's refrigerator, on any sites that you can hack into. Basically anywhere that there is any chance that anyone may see them. SPREAD THE WORD!

today is the day

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/RycjsKGrRYI/AAAAAAAAAik/s3GfgF9jZMY/s200/halloween_1024x768.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127105942318171522" /> hello my salami friends! The autumn rite is commemorated in the United Kingdom, although with a surprising and distinctive British twist. In Mexico, Latin America, and Spain, All Souls' Day, the third day of the three-day Hallowmas observance, is the most important part of the celebration for many people. In Ireland and Canada, Halloween, which was once a frightening and superstitious time of year, is celebrated much as it is in the United States, with trick-or-treating, costume parties, and fun for all ages.

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (pronounced sow-in), which means "end of summer", the Celtic New year.

Trick for Treat

The custom of trick or treating probably has several origins. During Samhain, the Druids believed that the dead would play tricks on mankind and cause panic and destruction. They had to be appeased, so country folk would give the Druids food as they visited their homes.

An old Irish peasant practice called for going door to door to collect money, breadcake, cheese, eggs, butter, apples, etc., in preparation for the festival of St. Columb Kill.

Also a ninth-century European custom called souling. On November 2, All Souls Day, early Christians would walk from village to village begging for "soul cakes" made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.

Did You Know...

* A traditional food eaten on Halloween is barnbrack, a kind of fruitcake that can be bought in stores or baked at home. A muslin-wrapped treat is baked inside the cake that, it is said, can foretell the eater's future. If a ring is found, it means that the person will soon be wed; a piece of straw means that a prosperous year is on its way.

Bobbing for Apples:

When the Celts were absorbed by the Roman Empire, many rituals of Roman origin began. Among them was the worship of Pomona, goddess of the harvest, often portrayed sitting on a basket of fruits and flowers. Apples were the sacred fruit of the goddess, and many games of divination involving them entered the Samhain customs.

The Witch's Broomstick:

The witch is a central symbol of Halloween. The name comes from the Saxon wica, meaning wise one. When setting out for a Sabbath, witches rubbed a sacred ointment onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting they felt even giddier. Some witches rode on horseback, but poor witches went on foot and carried a broom or a pole to aid in vaulting over streams. In England when new witches were initiated they were often blindfolded, smeared with flying ointment and placed on a broomstick. The ointment would confuse the mind, speed up the pulse and numb the feet. When they were told "You are flying over land and sea," the witch took their word for it.

Jack-O-Lanterns:

Irish children used to carve out potatoes or turnips and light them for their Halloween gatherings. They commemorated Jack, a shifty Irish villain so wicked that neither God nor the Devil wanted him. Rejected by both the sacred and profane, he wandered the world endlessly looking for a place to rest, his only warmth a glittering candle in a rotten turnip. Read about Jack in the 'Legend of the Jack-O-Lantern' short story.

Did You Know...

* The Irish Potato Famine (1845-50) prompted over 700,000 people to immigrate to the Americas. These immigrants brought with them their traditions of Halloween and Jack o'Lanterns, but turnips were not as readily available as back home. They found the American pumpkin to be a more than an adequate replacement. Today, the carved pumpkin is perhaps the most famous icon of the holiday.

Halloween Masquerade Mask:

From earliest times people wore masks when droughts or other disasters struck. They believed that the demons who had brought their misfortune upon them would become frightened off by the hideous masks. Even after the festival of Samhain had merged with Halloween, Europeans felt uneasy at this time of the year. Food was stored in preparation for the winter and the house was snug and warm. The cold, envious ghosts were outside, and people who went out after dark often wore masks to keep from being recognised.

Pumpkin Facts

* In 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America, he reported finding "gros melons." The name was translated into English as "pompions," which has since evolved into the modern "pumpkin."
* Pumpkins have been grown in North America for five thousand years. They are indigenous to the western hemisphere.
* Pumpkins are fruits. A pumpkin is a type of squash and is a member of the gourd family (Cucurbitacae), which include squash, cucumbers, gherkins, and melons.
* Pumpkin seeds should be planted between the last week of May and the middle of June. They take between 90 and 120 days to grow and are picked in October when they are bright orange in color. Their seeds can be saved to grow new pumpkins the next year.
* 2006 New World Record! In what has become an annual event, the world record has fallen once more. The largest pumpkin ever grown stands at 1,502 pounds. It was grown by Ron Wallace of Greene, Rhode Island. It was weighed in on October 7, 2006 at the Rhode Island Weigh-off. Will the record fall again in 2007? I will let you know!

article from: http://www.halloweenishere.com/history.html

they will never see it comin

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/RwDnWeFhrUI/AAAAAAAAAOs/PjZdL970Dts/s200/ghk_cvr-158x115.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116343549912264002" />
GET A LOAD OF THIS CRAP-ASS ARTICLE!
"Prevent Halloween Pranks
How can I make my home less of a target for gags?

Be friendly when you hand out candy. The holiday we know as Halloween has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts. The Celts worshipped nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. It was "he" who commanded their work and their rest times, and who made the earth beautiful and the crops grow.

The Celts celebrated their New Year on November 1st. It was celebrated every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."

On October 31st after the crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished. The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). The Druids would light new fires and offer sacrifices of crops and animals. As they danced around the the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin.

When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free from evil spirits.

The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronounced "sow-en"). The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes made from the skins and heads of their animals. This festival would become the first Halloween.

During the first century the Romans invaded Britain. They brought with them many of their festivals and customs. One of these was the festival know as Pomona Day, named for their goddess of fruits and gardens. It was also celebrated around the 1st of November. After hundreds of years of Roman rule the customs of the Celtic's Samhain festival and the Roman Pomona Day mixed becoming 1 major fall holiday.

The next influence came with the spread of the new Christian religion throughout Europe and Britain. In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church would make November 1st a church holiday to honor all the saints. This day was called All Saint's Day, or Hallowmas, or All Hallows. Years later the Church would make November 2nd a holy day. It was called All Souls Day and was to honor the dead. It was celebrated with big bonfires, parades, and people dressing up as saints, angels and devils.

But the spread of Christianity did not make people forget their early customs. On the eve of All Hallows, Oct. 31, people continued to celebrate the festivals of Samhain and Pomona Day. Over the years the customs from all these holidays mixed. October 31st became known as All Hallow Even, eventually All Hallow's Eve, Hallowe'en, and then - Halloween.

The Halloween we celebrate today includes all of these influences, Pomona Day's apples, nuts, and harvest, the Festival of Samhain's black cats, magic, evil spirits and death, and the ghosts, skeletons and skulls from All Saint's Day and All Soul's Day.

article taken from:
http://www.holidays.net/halloween/story.htm

art taken from:
www.suicidekitten.com

how christian wiccans celebrate this spoke in the wheel of the year

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/Rv5cr-FhqdI/AAAAAAAAAHk/QPoxDi1fbEs/s200/cwbanner.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115628137209768402" />

Mabon, Autumn Equinox or The Feast Kyriat: September 21
The Wheel of the Year turns once again; day and night, and male and female forces are equally balanced. Mabon occurs on the Autumn Equinox, which falls on or around September 21. This is the time for the second harvest. Mabon is the completion of the harvest, which began at Lammas.
This is the Traditional Wiccan Thanksgiving Feast. It was brought from Europe to America with the Pilgrims and however Christianized it may have seemed, its roots run deep to this Celebration of Mabon. Before the era of modern timekeeping, the peasants of Europe celebrated Mabon on September 25. Technology now allows us to calculate the exact day of the autumnal equinox.
At the time of the Autumn Equinox, the sun enters the Zodiac sign of Libra, perfectly symbolized by the balanced scales. It is no wonder that "Michaelmas," a feast in honor of the Archangel Michael, was chosen to represent this day of balance, as Michael is most often depicted with a sword in one hand and a set of scales in the other!
We celebrate The Feast Kyriat of Jesus Christ as he fed the ten thousand with five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish. The Miracle of this grand feast can fall on the American holiday of Thanksgiving or the traditional holiday of Mabon. This holiday is for celebrating the prosperity of the year's hard work; one does not have to be farmer to harvest a bountiful financial crop.
The colors affiliated with Mabon are brown, orange, violet, maroon, and gold. The Symbols affiliated with Mabon include grapes, wine and garlands, gourds cornucopia, Indian corn, and sun wheels. It is also known as the time of the Festival of Dionysus, Feast of Avalon, Alban Eifed, and the Horn of Plenty, the Cornucopia. This is the time of rest as Nature declines, preparing itself for winter.

Samhain, Halloween, or Hallowmas: October 31
Samhain (pronounced "sow-wen") is an ancient Celtic festival that celebrates the end of the Wheel of the Year, marked by the death of the Solar God, and the beginning of the Celtic New Year. Samhain formally indicates the end of summer; Samhain literally means "summer's end." The Druids, in ancient Ireland, once sacrificed to their deities by burning victims in wicker cages. In those ancient times, all other fires were extinguished and re-lit from the sacrificial fire. This custom continues in Ireland and Scotland, all fires in homes today; practitioners extinguish and re-light their fires from the main bonfires, but now safely and without sacrificial victims.
Samhain marks the third harvest and the storage of provisions for winter. On this night of the year, the veil between the worlds of the living and dead is the thinnest. Souls of the dead can come into the land of the living. It is during this time that Wiccans of all traditions find it easier to communicate with their deceased loved ones. As an offering of respect and remembrance, some Wiccans bake cakes for the souls of the dead.
Samhain is a time for eliminating weaknesses, when farmers once slaughtered the weak animals of the herd that may not to be able to survive the winter. This custom has evolved into the modern practice of ridding oneself of unwanted habits and weaknesses. The Rite of Paper and Fire transpires by writing the undesirable qualities on a piece of paper and dropping them into a fire. Symbolically, as the paper burns and disappears, so do the weaknesses of the individual.
All Hallow's Eve or Halloween is the Christianized name for the Sabbat ritual of Samhain. The modern custom of trick-and-treating may have originated from an old Irish peasant custom of going door-to-door to collect money, bread cake, cheese, eggs, butter, nuts, apples and other foods in preparation for the festival of St. Columb Kill. Apples are included in many rites, especially as ingredients in brews. Dunking for apples may have been a divinatory practice.
The colors affiliated with Samhain and Halloween are orange, black, and red. The symbols affiliated with Samhain and Halloween: carved pumpkins or jack-o'-lanterns, costumes of the dead (both ghastly and celestial), corn stalks, and bales of hay.

article taken from:
http://www.christianwicca.org/sabbats.htm

the enchantment of mabon

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/RvxCv-FhqXI/AAAAAAAAAG0/yMbPsMnAW64/s200/pumpkins.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115036668673501554" />
THIS ARTICLE IS PAGAN-CENTERED BUT I, A CHRISTIAN, STILL CAN'T DENY THE SPELL THIS TIME OF YEAR CASTS!! xoxo luvautumn

"Mabon is a magical time. The leaves are starting to change. There's a snap in the evening air, and dew in the morning grass. The cries of migratory birds make you look up and take in that spicy scent that begins to fill the air. Mabon marks the beginning of autumn, a time of balance between light and dark, but now we are moving from light into darkness, from the warm, abundance of summer to the barren, cold winter. Also called Harvest Home, this holiday is a ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth and a recognition of the need to share them.

Yet Mabon is probably the most undervalued or forgotten Sabbat in the Wheel of the Year. It's not hard to see why. Mabon is not overshadowed by commercialism the way Ostara, Samhain and Yule are. It marks the second harvest, between Lughnassadh and Samhain, but many of us don't live in an agricultural community. And unlike other Sabbats, Mabon is not an authentic ancient festival in either name or date. Although there are many folk customs associated with the fall harvest and modern Pagans often refer to the Welsh story of Mabon and his mother Modron, it appears the autumn equinox was not celebrated in Celtic countries.

Mabon may be a quiet holiday, but it is a deeply profound one, and there are many ways to celebrate it without family.

Decorate your altar
The Autumn Equinox altar is simple. Leaves in the new fall colors and late-blooming flowers make beautiful adornments. You can also add small pumpkins or a pomegranate. Autumn is associated with water, emotions, and relationships, so you can include a small bowl of water. This bowl can be used for scrying at Samhain.

Celebrate animals
The God has many faces. He is the Horned One, the Green Man, the Stag, the Oak King, and the Holly King. In other words, He is the face of nature. Many Pagans honor nature as place we long to go to – the valley, the mountains, the beach – but we often to forget to look in our own backyard. Mabon is an excellent time to honor our animal companions.

Prepare your circle and altar with animal symbols. Call in the powers of the directions by invoking animals associated with them and making their sounds. Invoke the Goddess and God of your tradition or personal preference. Invite the spirits of animal companions that have passed on as well as any others that might have special meanings (such as totem animals). Try to bring in your own pets into the circle, if possible. Consider animals in your neighborhood, your state, your continent, and the rest of the world. Think about animals that are extinct and those endangered. Raise energy by making animal sounds – barking, meowing, growling, howling, roaring. Bless the Earth, all Her creatures, and those that work hard to preserve Her. Have animal cookies and milk and talk with your children about ways they can help preserve species.

Have a Thanksgiving feast
November's Thanksgiving is often a stressful experience that need not be replicated, but thanksgiving is essentially what Mabon is about and it offers your family an opportunity to create a unique family tradition. Unlike Thanksgiving, which often involves lots of family, this special Mabon meal is intimate, just for your immediate family. Although if you enjoy opening your home to others, by all means, do so. Decorate your dinner table with fall colors. Use harvest ingredients like apples, pumpkin, corn, grapes, pomegranates, wines and ciders, and game such as duck, pheasant, quail, rabbit and goose. Turkey is the obvious choice, I don't recommend it only because you'll be having plenty of turkey soon enough. Discuss the meaning of Mabon and let everyone express what they are grateful for.

Get crafty
Since the Earth is in perfect balance during the Autumn Equinox, a mobile is a great craft to make. Using sticks, leaves, and other natural objects to create it. Corn dollies are another excellent craft to make as are scarecrows.

Create candle holders out of fruits and vegetables. Place the item so it stands safely on a flat surface to find a spot on the top where you can dig a neat hole for your candle. Secure the candle with a little dripped wax. Rinse apple holes with lemon juice to slow the browning process.

Mabon lends itself to beautiful wreathes that reflect the richness of the season. Add green and orange leaves, vines, berries, pods, pine cones, flowers, and whatever else you can find. Don't be afraid to use nontraditional items like shed snakeskin. They can be completely natural or you can purchase some items from your local craft store. You can also make floral centerpieces.

Take a family outing
Go outside to witness the seasonal changes – the leaves turning, birds migrating. Visit a farmer's market for seasonal fruits and vegetables. If you can, visit a farm that lets you pick your own. The Autumn Equinox is an official holiday in Japan, where it is spent visiting family graves and holding family reunions. Where I live, the local Japanese museum hosts an event called Basket of Berries. Check to see what may be going on in your community in the spirit of the season.

Explore myths and traditions
The myths of Mabon and Modron and Demeter and Persephone are among the most popular at this time of year, but there are figures that can be explored. John Barleycorn (Britain), Xilonen (Aztec), and Pomona (Roman), Dionysus (Greek), Herne and Cernunos (Celtic) are a few examples. You can incorporate myths into your rituals by having your kids write and/or act out simple plays.

Learn something new
With all the migrating birds, this is a great time to take up birdwatching. You don't need much to be a backyard birdwatcher – a notebook, a field guide, a pair of inexpensive binoculars. Make some bird feeders to attract more birds. Backyard Birding for Kids by Fran Lee is good beginner's book and be sure to see Birdwatching in My Backyard by Christina Coruth right here at Suite101.com.

This is also a great time to introduce your older children to magickal herbalism or kitchen witchery. Begin with what is commonly seen at this time of the year – apples, pumpkins, clove, cinnamon, morning glory, and pine. You can also introduce your older children to candle magick.

The harvest season is a glorious one. It's abundant and brings a delightful breeze that makes the colorful leaves dance and swirl. Let this wonderful season inspire you and your family. Take in what is left of the golden sunshine and spend some quality time outside before the cold winter confines you inside. Decorate your home with the magical natural items the seasons offers and take a look at the overflowing cornucopia that life has given you. May your harvest season be plentiful and enchanting."
Author: Cosette Paneque
Published on: Sep 18, 2005
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/pagan_parenting/118254

Day of the Dead Honors the Deceased

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/Rvw-vOFhqTI/AAAAAAAAAGU/0Mq7e35besQ/s200/cross.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115032257742088498" />
From Gerald Erichsen,

Holiday's Focus Different than Halloween's
At first glance, the Mexican custom of El Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31, and the festivities are abundant in images related to death.

But the customs have different origins, and their attitudes toward death are different: In the typical Halloween festivities, death is something to be feared. But in el día de los muertos, death — or at least the memories of those who have died — is something to be celebrated.

El día de los muertos, which continues until Nov. 2, has become one of the biggest holidays in Mexico, and celebrations are becoming more common in areas of the United States with a large Hispanic population. Its origins are distinctly Mexican: During the time of the Aztecs, a monthlong summer celebration was overseen by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. After the Aztecs were conquered by Spain and Catholicism became the dominant religion, the customs became intertwined with the Christian commemoration of All Saints' Day on Nov. 1.

Specifics of the celebration vary with region, but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. Vigils are held, and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives. Festivities also frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can conceal a miniature skeleton.

This About.com page has been optimized for print. Some believe that Samhain was the more important festival, marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, just as the Celtic day began at night. For it was understood that in dark silence comes whisperings of new beginnings, the stirring of the seed below the ground. Whereas Beltane welcomes in the summer with joyous celebrations at dawn, the most magically potent time of this festival is November Eve, the night of October 31st, known today of course, as Halloween.

Samhain (Scots Gaelic: Samhuinn) literally means “summer's end.” In Scotland and Ireland, Halloween is known as Oche Shamhna, while in Wales it is Nos Calan Gaeaf, the eve of the winter's calend, or first. With the rise of Christianity, Samhain was changed to Hallowmas, or All Saints' Day, to commemorate the souls of the blessed dead who had been canonized that year, so the night before became popularly known as Halloween, All Hallows Eve, or Hollantide. November 2nd became All Souls Day, when prayers were to be offered to the souls of all who the departed and those who were waiting in Purgatory for entry into Heaven. Throughout the centuries, pagan and Christian beliefs intertwine in a gallimaufry of celebrations from Oct 31st through November 5th, all of which appear both to challenge the ascendancy of the dark and to revel in its mystery.

In the country year, Samhain marked the first day of winter, when the herders led the cattle and sheep down from their summer hillside pastures to the shelter of stable and byre. The hay that would feed them during the winter must be stored in sturdy thatched ricks, tied down securely against storms. Those destined for the table were slaughtered, after being ritually devoted to the gods in pagan times. All the harvest must be gathered in -- barley, oats, wheat, turnips, and apples -- for come November, the faeries would blast every growing plant with their breath, blighting any nuts and berries remaining on the hedgerows. Peat and wood for winter fires were stacked high by the hearth. It was a joyous time of family reunion, when all members of the household worked together baking, salting meat, and making preserves for the winter feasts to come. The endless horizons of summer gave way to a warm, dim and often smoky room; the symphony of summer sounds was replaced by a counterpoint of voices, young and old, human and animal.

In early Ireland, people gathered at the ritual centers of the tribes, for Samhain was the principal calendar feast of the year. The greatest assembly was the 'Feast of Tara,' focusing on the royal seat of the High King as the heart of the sacred land, the point of conception for the new year. In every household throughout the country, hearth-fires were extinguished. All waited for the Druids to light the new fire of the year -- not at Tara, but at Tlachtga, a hill twelve miles to the north-west. It marked the burial-place of Tlachtga, daughter of the great druid Mogh Ruith, who may once have been a goddess in her own right in a former age.

At at all the turning points of the Celtic year, the gods drew near to Earth at Samhain, so many sacrifices and gifts were offered up in thanksgiving for the harvest. Personal prayers in the form of objects symbolizing the wishes of supplicants or ailments to be healed were cast into the fire, and at the end of the ceremonies, brands were lit from the great fire of Tara to re-kindle all the home fires of the tribe, as at Beltane. As they received the flame that marked this time of beginnings, people surely felt a sense of the kindling of new dreams, projects and hopes for the year to come.

The Samhain fires continued to blaze down the centuries. In the 1860s the Halloween bonfires were still so popular in Scotland that one traveler reported seeing thirty fires lighting up the hillsides all on one night, each surrounded by rings of dancing figures, a practice which continued up to the first World War. Young people and servants lit brands from the fire and ran around the fields and hedges of house and farm, while community leaders surrounded parish boundaries with a magic circle of light. Afterwards, ashes from the fires were sprinkled over the fields to protect them during the winter months -- and of course, they also improved the soil. The bonfire provided an island of light within the oncoming tide of winter darkness, keeping away cold, discomfort, and evil spirits long before electricity illumined our nights. When the last flame sank down, it was time to run as fast as you could for home, raising the cry, “The black sow without a tail take the hindmost!”

Even today, bonfires light up the skies in many parts of the British Isles and Ireland at this season, although in many areas of Britain their significance has been co-opted by Guy Fawkes Day, which falls on November 5th, and commemorates an unsuccessful attempt to blow up the English Houses of Parliament in the 17th century. In one Devonshire village, the extraordinary sight of both men and women running through the streets with blazing tar barrels on their backs can still be seen! Whatever the reason, there will probably always be a human need to make fires against the winter’s dark.
...
http://www.chalicecentre.net/samhain.htm

don't let salami gross you out!!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/RvZ3TeFhqNI/AAAAAAAAAFk/wGmrmJ_oGfE/s200/grossedoutbob.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113405603303237842" />
DON'T BE DISGUSTED!!!
IT IS MADE WITH NORMAL SHIT, I SWEAR!!!
LOOK HERE!!

HOMEMADE SALAMI
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 1 Hour 30 Minutes Ready In: 1 Day 1 Hour 45 Minutes
Yields: 30 servings

INGREDIENTS:
2 pounds ground beef
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon mustard seed
2 tablespoons curing salt
1 tablespoon coarsely ground
black pepper
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
(optional)
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
flavoring

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, mustard seed, curing salt, black pepper and liquid smoke. Mix in the red pepper flakes if desired. Roll the mixture into a 2 inch diameter log, and wrap tightly in aluminum foil. Refrigerate for 24 hours.
2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Make a few slits in the bottom of the roll to allow the fat to drain when cooking. Place roll onto a broiler pan, and fill the bottom part of the pan with about 1 inch of water to keep the salami moist.
3. Bake for 90 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from pan and cool completely before unwrapping the salami. Slice and eat as lunchmeat, or serve on a tray with crackers and cheese.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED © 2007 Allrecipes.com
Printed from Allrecipes.com 9/23/2007

be in "the know" & join the SWAT team

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BsUfvQ9Xyag/RvZ0xeFhqMI/AAAAAAAAAFc/96ci4zsEcuE/s200/joinus.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113402820164430018" />
are you bored and need something to do?

are you not only into the salami project in theory, but you want to contribute your own stories, pics, videos, and ideas?

are you suffering from a break up with a vegetarian that you now hate and want to piss off?

have you been black listed at every other organization and need the salami to redeem you?

are you pacing the floors, wringing your hands, and possibly taking medication all because people can't determine what the hell the real name for oct 30th is?: "is it cabbage night?", "is it goosey night?", "is it mischief night?" This is the story of Salami Night (or die nacht salamiwurst as it was originally called). Many many many years ago, there was a lonely old man, who loved salami very much. His name was Dr. Kielbasastein. All of the neighborhood children used to taunt him mercilessly, and chant at him, "If you love salami so much, why don't you marry it?". One day, as they were chanting, he realized that he had no good reason why not, so that is exactly what he decided to do. He went down into his basement laboratory, and began crafting a salamiwoman. Once he had finished, he sprinkled her with a very very secret blend of preservative chemicals and spices, then plugged her into a wall socket (being much too impatient to wait for a lightning storm). She came to life, but something had gone wrong, and she was horribly horribly insane. But he married her anyways, as I said, he was lonely, and loved salami very much. It was not long afterwards, that two things happened, one, salamiwoman, (who was named Genoa) started becoming very ill, and two, she also became very pregnant (don't ask, you don't want to know, trust me). It was a very difficult birth, and poor Genoa died while bringing their love child/luncheon meat into the world. Dr. Kielbasastein was very saddened, and went a little bit insaner than he had been previously. He raised the salamiboy, but taught him to hate non-preservative ladened people. Until one year, the night before Hallowe'en, salamiboy escaped, and went on a rampage. He killed and ate as many of the neighborhood children as he could catch, slicing them into wafer slices, and devouring them on bread with cheese and mustard. The villagers all got together to hunt salamiboy down, to avenge their little bratty children. Salamiboy ran back home to escape the horrible mob, and Dr. Kilbasastein let him in and closed and locked the gate. He begged the villagers to let him take care of things. They reluctantly agreed, telling him he had until Hallowe'en morning to fix things. Dr. Kielbasastein sat salamiboy down and tried to explain to him that what he had done was wrong, but there was no getting through to him. The next morning, as the villagers woke up, each of them who had lost a child in the rampage found a piece of salami duct taped to their door. Dr Kielbasastein explained that he had taken care of the problem, and hoped that helped soothe their feelings. They said that maybe it did, but they would have to think about it, so every year after that, he would place an offering of salami on their doors on the anniversary, in the hopes that eventually they would forgive him. They never did, and eventually beat him to death with wiffle ball bats for all the salami on their doors, but for some reason, the tradition persists to this very day, and some of the older folks swear that he didn't kill salamiboy, he just bought a bunch of salami at the deli and pretended he had, and on some nights, just before Hallowe'en, when the wind blows just right, you can still smell the preservative chemicals on tthe breeze, and hear a soft voice chanting, "if you love salami so much, why don't you marry it..."

posted by permission of author-historian RORRIMLOFF

Salami Day - 9/7 Salami Night - 10/30

Salami Day: September 7th
http://varoper.com/salami/celebrate.html

"How you, too, can celebrate Salami Day

Salami day, as with all meat producted oriented holidays, should be celebrated with a hearty dose of vigor as well as a well-prepared stomach! Of couse, the simplest way to celebrate Salami Day is simply to eat some Salami. But, you may be asking yourself, how do I do this? Simple: head down to your nearest deli and pick up a pound or two, or even an entire log if you are feeling festive! Your local deli should have several types to choose from, don't get overwhelmed! The important part is that you uphold the spirit of Salami day, and you can do this even with a quick trip to your local sub shop! Be sure to drag all of your friends with, as we don't want to leave anyone out of the festivities.

Now, if you are looking to hold a Salami Day related event, or even if you simply wish to pique your co-workers' interest (and appetites!), you can embellish your Salami with the appropriate edible accoutrements. For example, a deli platter always goes over well. Cheese is an excellent companion food item for salami. Crackers, as well, are quite appropriate. Should you be feeling particularly saucy on our beloved September 7th, head on down to your local wine retailer and see if they have any good bottles to accompany a nice log of salami!

For the truly adventurous soul, the ideas for sprucing up a Salami Day related party are as limitless as your imagination. Some suggestions we can put forth include:

Pin the tail on the Salami
Bobbing for Salami (even more delightful when floating in a tub of hot butter, watch out for your arteries, though!)
Salami Day costume contest
Salami party hats
Invite every guest to bring a wienerdog
Play a good game of Sausageball
A knitting/crocheting party, to make doilies and coverlets for your salami
Salami sculpture contest
Salami trivia games
Play 'Name that Salami!' by having a blindfolded taste test
And that's just the tip of the iceberg!" It was slow one day so my manager bought us a few sandwhiches. Another store called and asked if we could ship a pair of ***** to them. My manager thought it would be funny to slip a piece of salami in the sneaker.

Well, when the other store received the shoe they gave it to the customer. Needless to say the customer flipped out. No one checked the shoe, just gave it to the customer. I would be pissed too if I was going to spend $100 on shoes with salami inside of it. The store blamed **** and called **** HQ. **** had no idea what to do.

So I guess salami can be serious."

By: my friend Chris

are you duct-ed up? With it, an aggressor can influence and eventually dominate a landscape, typically political, piece by piece. In most cases it includes the creation of several factions within the opposing political party and then dismantling that party from the inside, without causing the "sliced" sides to protest.

The term was coined in the late 1940s by the ultra-Stalinist Mátyás Rákosi to describe the actions of the Hungarian Communist Party. Similar tactics were also used in the majority of the Communist-dominated states of the post-war era.

The tactic is not limited to communism. Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party achieved absolute power in Germany within the early months of 1933 by squeezing out his conservative partners, partners who had acceded in the outlawing of Communists and Social Democrats and granting emergency powers to him.

[edit] Salami Tactics in Road Building

Salami Tactics refers to the common bureaucratic practice of proposing unpopular measures in a piecemeal fashion, so that people see the relatively innocuous pieces rather than the cumulative effect. In the case of freeway planning it means building half a freeway, allowing traffic to build up, then building the other half to solve a ‘traffic problem’ that no-one remembers them creating in the first place.

* Public Transport Users Association, 'Its time to move' 2002. "[1]".

Salami Tactics was a theme in an episode of the Yes Minister TV series.

[edit] External link

if bologna was our past, salami is our future

Mischief night
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mischief night is a tradition in England, Scotland, Ireland, and the United States of a night in the calendar when the custom is for young people to take a degree of licence to play pranks and do mischief to their neighbours.

Traditional practice

Until the nineteenth century it was celebrated at Halloween (31 October and the eve of winter ) or , May Eve (30 April and the eve of summer). Occasionally though, the damage can include the more serious spray-painting of buildings and homes, and shooting people and things with paintball guns.
In New York, called "Cabbage Night", children resort to all of the prior stunts, as well as using moldy food such as cabbages to throw at homes. Also, bags of feces are set on porches and lit on fire, so that when the pranksters knock on the door, the recipient stamps out the bag- and covers their shoe in undesired feces. Less vandalous though, is the ever-popular "ding-dong-ditch": in this 'game', people ring doorbells, then run and hide somewhere nearby.

See also
Halloween
Devil's Night
April Fool's Day
Nickanan night
SALAMI NIGHT (one day, folks.... with YOUR help.... Did you aspirate on your spleen? Are you signing up? I know you want to. Just to be able to tell your grandchildren that you were there for the very first Salami Night.
